California Pharmacist: CE & renewal requirements
30 CE contact hours every 2 years
Biennial, on the last day of your birth month.
Source: California State Board of Pharmacy · confirmed 2026-06. Requirements change — always verify with the board.
Required topics
- 1 hr Pharmacy Law — must be the Board's own webinar
- 1 hr Ethics — must be the Board's own webinar
- 1 hr Cultural Competency (renewals on/after Jan 2024)
First renewal & exemptions
New pharmacists are exempt from CE for their first renewal (nothing is due until the end of the second period).
If your license lapses
Practicing on an expired license is unlawful; delinquent renewal requires fees plus completing the CE.
How CE is tracked
Self-certify; California does NOT use CPE Monitor or CE Broker — keep certificates 4 years for random mail audits.
Watch out: The 1-hr law and 1-hr ethics must be the BOARD'S OWN webinars (not just any ACPE law course), and there's no CPE Monitor tracking in California.
