California Registered Nurse: CE & renewal requirements

30 CE contact hours every 2 years

Every 2 years, expiring on the last day of your birth month.

Source: California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) · confirmed 2026-06. Requirements change — always verify with the board.

First renewal & exemptions

New graduates are exempt from CE for their first renewal.

If your license lapses

You can't practice on a delinquent license. Late renewal carries a delinquency fee; a license delinquent for several years faces added reinstatement steps.

How CE is tracked

Self-attest during online renewal in BreEZe. Certificates aren't uploaded but must be kept for 4 years in case of audit.

Watch out: All 30 hours must come from a BRN-approved provider — generic online courses that aren't BRN-approved won't count, a common audit failure.
