Illinois Real Estate Broker (agent level): CE & renewal requirements
12 CE contact hours every 2 years
Biennial — Broker licenses expire April 30 of even-numbered years.
Source: Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) · confirmed 2026-06. Requirements change — always verify with the board.
Required topics
- 6 hrs Core course
- 6 hrs electives — must include Sexual Harassment Prevention training
First renewal & exemptions
First renewal: 45 hours of Post-License Education (three 15-hour courses) instead of the 12-hour CE.
If your license lapses
You can't practice or collect compensation on an expired license; reinstatement is available with late fees.
How CE is tracked
Self-certify on the IDFPR online renewal; retain proof for audit and use IDFPR-approved providers.
Watch out: Illinois has NO 'salesperson' license — the residential agent license is called 'Broker' (this 12-hour rule is the Broker requirement). The mandatory Sexual Harassment Prevention training counts toward the 6 electives, so it's easy to overlook.
