Maryland Licensed Certified Social Worker–Clinical: CE & renewal requirements
40 CE contact hours every 2 years
Biennial — the renewal period runs Nov 1 through Oct 31 of the expiration year; CE units don't carry over.
Source: Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners · confirmed 2026-06. Requirements change — always verify with the board.
Required topics
- At least 20 hrs Category I (live/real-time interactive)
- 3 hrs Ethics & professional conduct
- 3 hrs anti-oppressive practice (race/culture/equity) — must be Category I
First renewal & exemptions
Extensions up to 6 months for illness, military service, prolonged absence, declared emergency, or financial hardship.
If your license lapses
Unmet CE means no renewal is issued; the license goes to non-renewed status and can be reinstated within 5 years (40 CE in the 2 years before reinstatement + fee).
How CE is tracked
Self-attest at renewal; the Board audits a percentage each cycle. Keep records 3 years.
Watch out: Maryland's clinical license is LCSW-C (not 'LCSW' — MD reserves LCSW for a non-clinical level), and the 3-hr anti-oppressive-practice requirement must be live (Category I).
