Maryland Registered Nurse: CE & renewal requirements

No fixed CE-hour count — Maryland uses a three-option competency model (1,000 practice hours, a recent degree, or 30 CEUs).

Biennial, by the 28th of your birth month (year follows birth-year parity). Meet one of: 1,000 practice hours in 5 years, a recent approved degree, or 30 CEUs in 2 years.

Required topics

First renewal & exemptions

No CE is needed if you qualify via 1,000 practice hours or recent graduation.

If your license lapses

You can't practice on a lapsed license; longer lapses require reinstatement and re-demonstrating competency.

How CE is tracked

Attest one of the three options at online renewal; CEUs do not carry forward to the next period.

Watch out: The '30 CEUs' figure is only one of three options — most working nurses skip it via practice hours — and a new one-time implicit-bias/structural-racism training begins at the first renewal after Apr 1, 2026.

Maryland doesn't use a single CE-hour number here, so enter the hour-based requirement that applies to your situation (or just track your renewal date). No signup.

Informational only, based on the numbers you enter — not legal or licensing advice, and not an official record. Confirm your exact requirement and current status with the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON).
