Massachusetts Real Estate Salesperson: CE & renewal requirements

12 CE contact hours every 2 years

Biennial — your license renews on your birthday every 2 years.

Required topics

First renewal & exemptions

Massachusetts attorneys in good standing who are licensed brokers are exempt; otherwise the 12 hours apply (no general first-renewal waiver).

If your license lapses

If CE isn't done by the renewal date, the license is renewed as INACTIVE by law (you can't practice until you complete the CE).

How CE is tracked

Complete CE at Board-approved schools; renew via the state online portal and keep certificates.

Watch out: Failing CE doesn't void the license — it flips to 'inactive' automatically, which is easy to overlook. Your renewal date is your birthday, not a fixed statewide date.
