Massachusetts Registered Nurse: CE & renewal requirements

15 CE contact hours every 2 years

Biennial — your license expires on your birthday in even-numbered years; you may renew up to 90 days early.

Source: Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing · confirmed 2026-06. Requirements change — always verify with the board.

Required topics

First renewal & exemptions

No CE is required for your first renewal.

If your license lapses

Practicing on a lapsed license is prohibited; late renewal incurs fees and possible documentation requests.

How CE is tracked

Self-attest at renewal — the Board approves no programs and wants no certificates unless it audits you. A contact hour is 50 minutes.

Watch out: Massachusetts counts a contact hour as 50 minutes (not 60) and pre-approves no courses, so you decide what's acceptable — which puts the audit risk on you.
