Michigan Registered Nurse: CE & renewal requirements

25 CE contact hours every 2 years

Biennial — verify your individual expiration date in MiPLUS. The 25 hours must be earned in the 2 years before renewal.

Required topics

First renewal & exemptions

First renewal was historically CE-exempt, but licenses issued on/after May 8, 2024 DO require CE for the first renewal — check your issue date.

If your license lapses

There's a 60-day grace period to renew. Relicensure within 3 years requires proof of 25 CE hours (incl. 2 in pain management) from the 2 years before the application; beyond 3 years, more applies.

How CE is tracked

Self-attest in MiPLUS; LARA audits afterward — keep records 4 years. No more than 12 hours may be earned in any single 24-hour period.

Watch out: Human Trafficking training is separate and does NOT count toward your 25 hours, and Implicit Bias is its own block — nurses routinely miscount these and come up short on general CE.
