Minnesota Registered Nurse: CE & renewal requirements

24 CE contact hours every 2 years

Biennial, by your birth month (year follows birth-year parity). Renew by midnight on the expiration date.

Source: Minnesota Board of Nursing · confirmed 2026-06. Requirements change — always verify with the board.

First renewal & exemptions

The 24 hours can instead be met by a current national specialty certification or qualifying professional activities (publishing, presenting, or research).

If your license lapses

Renew by midnight on expiration to avoid reinstatement; practicing on a lapsed license is prohibited.

How CE is tracked

Self-attest at online renewal — you judge whether an activity qualifies. Keep records 2 years (60-minute hours).

Watch out: Unlike several neighbors, Minnesota DOES require 24 CE hours — but a current specialty certification can substitute for the hours entirely.
