New Jersey Registered Nurse: CE & renewal requirements
30 CE contact hours every 2 years
Biennial. The 30 contact hours must be earned in the 2 years before renewal; up to 15 surplus hours carry into the next period.
Source: New Jersey Board of Nursing (Division of Consumer Affairs) · confirmed 2026-06. Requirements change — always verify with the board.
Required topics
- 1 hr on prescription opioids / pain management (within the 30)
- 1 hr Organ & Tissue Donation — one-time
- 1 hr implicit bias — only if you care for pregnant patients
First renewal & exemptions
Confirm first-renewal handling with the Board; carry-over of up to 15 hours softens future cycles.
If your license lapses
Practicing on an expired license is prohibited; late renewal requires the full CE plus reinstatement fees.
How CE is tracked
Self-attest at online renewal; random audits — keep certificates. New Jersey counts a contact hour as 60 minutes.
Watch out: The one-time organ/tissue-donation hour is easy to forget if you trained out of state, and the implicit-bias hour only applies if you treat pregnant patients — both are common audit traps.
