New York Dental Hygienist: CE & renewal requirements
24 CE contact hours every 3 years
Triennial (3-year registration period).
Source: NYSED Office of the Professions — State Board for Dentistry · confirmed 2026-06. Requirements change — always verify with the board.
Required topics
- State-approved Infection Control course every 4 years
- 2 hrs Child Abuse Identification & Reporting (one-time)
- At least 14 of 24 hours must be LIVE
First renewal & exemptions
Exempt from CE during your first 3-year registration period — except those licensed by endorsement, who comply immediately.
If your license lapses
Non-compliance brings disciplinary action; you can request a conditional 1-year registration or place the license inactive.
How CE is tracked
Self-certify on renewal; random monthly audits — keep records 6 years.
Watch out: Hours don't carry over between periods, practice-management courses aren't acceptable, and infection control runs on a 4-year clock that doesn't align with the 3-year cycle.
