New York Licensed Clinical Social Worker: CE & renewal requirements
36 CE contact hours every 3 years
Triennial registration period (3 years).
Source: NYSED Office of the Professions — State Board for Social Work · confirmed 2026-06. Requirements change — always verify with the board.
Required topics
- 3 hrs Appropriate Professional Boundaries — every renewal
- Mandated child-abuse identification & reporting training (an updated curriculum is due in 2026 — verify the exact date)
First renewal & exemptions
No CE during your initial 3-year registration; prorated periods need 1 hour per month.
If your license lapses
Practicing while your registration is lapsed is professional misconduct; reinstatement requires meeting the CE obligation.
How CE is tracked
Self-attest at triennial renewal with NYSED; keep records about 6 years; CE must be from NYSED-approved sponsors.
Watch out: No more than 12 of the 36 hours (one-third) may be self-study — the rest must be other formats — and an updated child-abuse mandated-reporter training lands on every NY LCSW this cycle.
