New York Registered Nurse: CE & renewal requirements

No fixed CE-hour count — New York does NOT use a fixed CE-hours model for RNs — it requires specific mandated coursework instead.

Registration is renewed every 3 years (triennial), aligned to your birth month after the first cycle.

Required topics

First renewal & exemptions

Graduates of NY-registered nursing programs after Sept 1990 generally already satisfied the child-abuse course; infection-control exemptions exist for some practice settings.

If your license lapses

You may not practice while your registration is expired. Because NY isn't hours-based, the issue is registration status and completing the mandated coursework, not a CE-hour shortfall.

How CE is tracked

You attest to the mandated coursework at registration and keep your certificates; there's no continuous CE-hour ledger to file.

Watch out: Don't treat NY like an 'hours' state — it isn't. And the infection-control clock (every 4 years) is out of phase with the 3-year registration cycle, so you're tracking two separate timers.

New York doesn't use a single CE-hour number here, so enter the hour-based requirement that applies to your situation (or just track your renewal date). No signup.

Informational only, based on the numbers you enter — not legal or licensing advice, and not an official record. Confirm your exact requirement and current status with the NYSED Office of the Professions — State Board for Nursing.
