Ohio Certified Public Accountant: CE & renewal requirements
120 CE contact hours every 3 years
120 hours per 3-year period with a 20-hour annual minimum. Up to 24 excess hours carry forward (not ethics).
Source: Accountancy Board of Ohio · confirmed 2026-06. Requirements change — always verify with the board.
Required topics
- 3 hrs Professional Standards & Responsibilities (PSR) ethics — must be Ohio-Board-approved
- 24 hrs Accounting & Auditing if you do financial-reporting work
- 24 hrs Taxation if you do tax work
First renewal & exemptions
The A&A and Tax 24-hour requirements apply only if you do that type of work.
If your license lapses
Missing the 20-hour annual minimum draws a $10-per-credit fine; triennial non-compliance can block renewal.
How CE is tracked
Online renewal via the Accountancy Board of Ohio with attestation; keep documentation about 5 years.
Watch out: Ohio's 3-hour ethics (PSR) must be from a course specifically approved by the Board — generic/out-of-state ethics is rejected — and there's a hard 20-hour annual minimum with a per-credit fine.
