Texas Certified Public Accountant: CE & renewal requirements
120 CE contact hours every 3 years
120 hours per ROLLING 3-year period, with a minimum of 20 hours each year. The license itself renews annually (by the last day of your birth month).
Source: Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (TSBPA) · confirmed 2026-06. Requirements change — always verify with the board.
Required topics
- 4-hr Texas-specific Board-approved ethics course every 2 years
- Up to 50% (60 hrs) may be non-technical
First renewal & exemptions
Newly licensed CPAs are phased in over their first reporting periods.
If your license lapses
Non-compliance makes the license delinquent; shortfalls found on audit require make-up hours plus a penalty.
How CE is tracked
Report CPE annually via the TSBPA portal; keep documentation for audit. No carryover.
Watch out: It's a ROLLING 3-year window — there's no clean reset, so a weak year follows you for three years. Texas requires its own state-specific ethics course; generic out-of-state ethics won't count.
