Texas Real Estate Sales Agent: CE & renewal requirements

18 CE contact hours every 2 years

Every 2 years (subsequent renewals). You may renew up to 6 months early; up to 6 months late goes inactive. Online via TREC.

Source: Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) · confirmed 2026-06. Requirements change — always verify with the board.

Required topics

First renewal & exemptions

Your FIRST renewal is not regular CE — it's 98 hours of SAE (Sales Agent Apprentice Education): 90 hours of qualifying courses + 8 hours Legal Update. These cannot be deferred.

If your license lapses

Late within 6 months → inactive (no practice/commission until current). A $200 CE-deferral fee buys 60 extra days to finish CE while staying active. 6 months–2 years late → reinstatement; over 2 years → reapply and re-pass the exam.

How CE is tracked

CE providers report completions directly to TREC; status shows in your TREC account. Renew online and certify.

Watch out: The first renewal (98-hr SAE) is dramatically heavier than the recurring 18-hr CE, and SAE hours are firm and non-deferrable — new agents routinely underestimate it and let the license expire.
