Texas Registered Nurse: CE & renewal requirements

20 CE contact hours every 2 years

Every 2 years, on the last day of your birth month.

Source: Texas Board of Nursing (BON) · confirmed 2026-06. Requirements change — always verify with the board.

Required topics

First renewal & exemptions

You can satisfy the requirement with 20 contact hours OR by holding current national certification in your practice area.

If your license lapses

Practicing on an expired license is prohibited. Late renewal carries fees; longer lapses require formal reinstatement.

How CE is tracked

Self-attest in the Texas Nurse Portal. Randomly audited — keep CE records for 4 years.

Watch out: National certification can substitute for the 20 hours entirely — many nurses redo CE they didn't actually need.
