Virginia Certified Public Accountant: CE & renewal requirements
120 CE contact hours every 3 years
120 hours over a ROLLING 3-calendar-year window, with at least 20 hours each year. The license itself renews annually (June 30).
Source: Virginia Board of Accountancy (VBOA) · confirmed 2026-06. Requirements change — always verify with the board.
Required topics
- 2 hrs of a VBOA-approved Virginia-specific ethics course annually
- 8 hrs A&A coursework for those providing attest/compilation/financial-statement services
First renewal & exemptions
New-licensee proration: 0 hours the year you pass, 40 the first year after, 80 the second, full 120 from the third.
If your license lapses
Falling short can mean non-renewal, monetary penalties, and discipline; the license is invalid until you're compliant.
How CE is tracked
Self-report annually at renewal (June 30) via the VBOA portal; keep CPE records 4 years.
Watch out: 120 is measured over a ROLLING 3-year window, but the license renews ANNUALLY — don't conflate them. The 2-hr annual ethics must be the VBOA-approved course; generic ethics doesn't count.
