Virginia Licensed Clinical Social Worker: CE & renewal requirements
30 CE contact hours every 2 years
Biennial — licenses renew by June 30, and CE is required prior to renewal in even-numbered years.

Required topics
- At least 6 hrs in ethics, standards of practice, or Virginia social work law
- At least 20 hrs Category I (formally organized learning); Category II capped at 10 hrs
First renewal & exemptions
Extensions up to 1 year for good cause; up to 2 hours may be met via uncompensated services at a health department or free clinic.
If your license lapses
Standard DHP late-fee and reinstatement process applies after a lapse.
How CE is tracked
Self-attest at online DHP renewal; keep documentation for audit.
Watch out: CE is only due in EVEN years despite the annual-looking June 30 date — it's the full 30 hours once per 2-year cycle, and the 6 ethics hours explicitly include Virginia law/standards, not just generic ethics.
