Virginia Real Estate Salesperson: CE & renewal requirements
16 CE contact hours every 2 years
Biennial (2-year term) for experienced salespersons.
Source: Virginia Real Estate Board (DPOR) · confirmed 2026-06. Requirements change — always verify with the board.
Required topics
- 3 hrs Ethics & Standards of Conduct
- 2 hrs Fair Housing
- Plus Legal Updates, Agency and Contracts hours (the mandatory mix increased for licenses expiring on/after June 30, 2026)
- Remaining hours are electives
First renewal & exemptions
First renewal is NOT CE — new salespersons complete 30 hours of post-license education within one year. Post-license and CE don't substitute for each other.
If your license lapses
CE (or post-license) must be done to renew or reactivate; missing it blocks on-time renewal and triggers reinstatement rules.
How CE is tracked
Providers report to DPOR; renew via DPOR. Some out-of-state CE electives are accepted with proof.
Watch out: A 2024 law raised the mandatory-subject portion, widely MISREPORTED as cutting the total to 11 hours — the total is still 16 hours; only the mix shifted (fewer elective hours).
