Virginia Registered Nurse: CE & renewal requirements

No fixed CE-hour count — Virginia uses a continued-competency model (nine options), not a fixed CE-hours number.

Biennial, expiring at the end of your birth month (the year follows your birth-year parity). Meet one of nine continued-competency options each cycle.

First renewal & exemptions

You're exempt from the competency requirement for your first renewal after initial licensure.

If your license lapses

Failure to meet or document competency blocks renewal and can lead to disciplinary action; reinstatement requires meeting current rules plus fees.

How CE is tracked

Self-attest at renewal; the Board runs random audits and asks for documentation only if you're selected.

Watch out: The cheapest path for working nurses is 15 CE hours + 640 practice hours (vs. 30 CE hours pure) — and a current national specialty certification satisfies the entire requirement with zero CE.
